Marcia Christ, Former Ogilvy & Mather Creative Director, Joins MsGenuity as President and CEO to Launch Crowdfunding Within the Mom Consumer Market

As a 17 year Ogilvy & Mather veteran, Marcia Christ specializes in launching products into the mom and woman market. She is joining MsGenuity to bring reward-based crowdfunding, which today is focused on the male consumer, to the mom community.

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) February 18, 2015 – MsGenuity, the first crowdfunding portal to bring innovative product designs and community events to the mom consumer, announced today that Marcia Christ is joining the company as President and Chief Executive Officer. She will assume the role previously held by John Montelione, who is being assigned to Product Development Manager.

“We knew we wanted a new CEO with the ability to drive crowdfunding, from its current marketing focus on the male community, to the mom community and we needed a leader with a successful track record of launching new shopping concepts and products that appeal to the mom and women consumer,” said Montelione.

Christ, a 17 year Ogilvy & Mather veteran, has established a reputation for successfully launching products focused on the mom and women consumer. As Creative Director and Senior Vice-President, her clients included Kimberly-Clark, Chesebourgh-Ponds, Avon, American Express and Best Foods. She received numerous accolades including the Advertising Age Best TV Commercials, Effie, Andy and the Gold Annual International Film and TV Festival of New York awards. Christ also held visiting professor positions at Marist College and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University.

“Christ’s consumer-centric mindset, strong marketing expertise within the mom market, and track record as a successful executive are ideally suited to position MsGenuity for expansion during this exciting time in the evolution of the billion dollar crowdfunding market,” said Dennis Zink, a member of the MsGenuity Advisor Board. “She was the unanimous selection of the Advisory Board after a comprehensive search.”

“MsGenuity is well-positioned to play a growing role in funding the next generation of innovative consumer products,” stated Christ. “This is a huge opportunity that will be realized by delighting mom consumers with a fun shopping experience for products that are not available at any other web site. I am excited to join MsGenuity at this important chapter in its journey and forthcoming release of its crowdfunding portal.”

MsGenuity has made significant strides in the past nine months to build the first crowdfunding portal solely offering products and community events focused on the mom consumer. This is in contrast to leading crowdfunding portals such as Kickstarter where up to 80% of backers (i.e. project funders or contributors) are men. The MsGenuity site will be launched on March 3rd.

About MsGenuity

MsGenuity is building a reward-based crowdfunding portal to engage Mom shoppers who want to discover new products and projects not available at any other site. Conversely, MsGenuity offers both men and women crowdfunding project owners the opportunity of raising funds and collaborate on-line with mom shoppers. Reaching the mom community is key to the growth and balance of the crowdfunding market as moms spend 85¢ of every household $1. MsGenuity is located in Sarasota, FL. It is a Delaware corporation registered in Florida.

Reality Crowd TV Launches Virtual Incubator and Crowdfunding Network Platform for Entrepreneurs

Reality Crowd TV has created an entrepreneurial ecosystem designed for early stage start-ups to go from inception to successful funding in 6 months or less.

Hartford, CT (PRWEB) February 25, 2015 – The crowdfunding industry has been frequently highlighted in the media over the last few years because of the high profile projects that have been funded. The crowdfunding industry has been growing at a brisk pace with impressive revenue growth for the last three years. This growth has given birth to many new crowdfunding platforms and services which are now being offered in this rapidly evolving space.

One company that is leading the charge in this new revolution is Reality Crowd TV (RCTV). RCTV is an entrepreneurial focused firm that promotes the booming crowdfunding industry. The Company’s main focus will be to demonstrate how aspiring entrepreneurs can transform their kitchen table ideas in everywhere, USA, into the boardroom of tomorrow by using the crowdfunding model. RCTV teaches people that crowdfunding is not only an effective funding mechanism but a powerful marketing vehicle that can create a valuable customer base before a concept even comes to market and prove validation for an idea right from its inception.

The company’s new virtual incubator is a Quora ( like platform designed for its users to draw upon the collective knowledge of the incubator members to help entrepreneurs learn all the nuances of launching a start-up company. The platform is set up like a social media site with all the functions needed to effectively communicate with all groups and members. The Platform launched earlier this month with over 500 members and growing every day.

Founded in December of 2013, Reality Crowd TV engaged in a nationwide tour across the United States which included stops to Connecticut, New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Jacksonville, Austin, Houston, Denver, and Seattle in an effort to promote the nascent crowdfunding ecosystem and the many participants in it. Many of these stops were captured on video and can be found on the company YouTube channel.

Upon returning back to Connecticut in April 2014, the company had its first major breakthrough by adding a crowdfunding & digital media consultancy practice as part of the package to help entrepreneurs and their startups raise capital. Since April, the company has consulted 10 successful crowdfunding campaigns in varying capacities raising an aggregate of $825,000. Details of these successes can be seen in the Connecticut Innovation Summit Pitch Presentation.

The company has several more new projects in the works to be rolled out later this year, including their Reality Crowd TV Virtual Crowdfunding Summit to be hosted in November and December 2015. Many of the leading minds in crowdfunding and business are scheduled to speak at the summit later this year.

Indie Filmmaker Profiles Unknown Region Of Tajikistan

Ryan Bastian is making a film to help the people of the Pamir Region of Tajikistan. He is raising money on Indiegogo. Recently, I caught up with Matthias to learn more about the effort; here’s what he told me:

What is the social benefit you hope to achieve with or through your crowdfunding campaign?

Rural mountain communities in the Pamir Region of Tajikistan are trying to engage the world’s climbing, trekking, & outdoors communities in a bid to build an ecotourism industry that will create jobs and fight poverty in their homeland.

They need help getting their story out to the world and attracting adventurous visitors who value sustainability and responsible environmental practices.

The film project, Unveiling the Pamir, will bring them the exposure they need to build themselves a brighter future.

How much money are you hoping to raise and why? How much have you raised so far?

Over $35,000 USD in professional audio and digital video equipment has already been collected for the project.

To execute production of the film and cover remaining associated costs our crowdfunding campaign has a goal to raise $25,000 USD. These funds will go to the logistics and travel for 4 weeks of filming in Central Asia for a team of four:

Round trip to Dushanbe
Flights to/from Khorog
Visa/GBOA Permit
Evacuation/health Insurance
Food Room & board
SUV taxi to Pamir
Misc. Domestic travel in Pamir
Airline Ticket watcher
Driver in Pamir *
External Hard Drives
equipment Insurance
Insurance Premium
High Speed SD cards

Whom are you trying to help with your project and why?

Our film will benefit the growth of an industry (i.e. ecotourism and sustainable adventure tourism) in the Pamir that has the potential to bring in much needed foreign capital to the economy.

We want to directly support the work of the Pamir Ecotourism Association (PECTA) and the Mountain Societies Development Support Program (MSDSP).

PECTA is an association of local family businesses, guides, and hospitality providers that are dedicated the
environmental sustainability and social impact of tourism in their pristine and beautiful homeland. The small, but growing, tourism industry is improving income-earning potential for impoverished communities along the ancient route of the Persian Silk Road. However, if it’s not done sustainably, positive impacts will be short-lived and local communities could be left to deal with serious long-term negative consequences.

PECTA organizes trekking and Adventure tours in the Pamir Region (a mountainous section of the Silk Road that was once part of the Persian Empire), which helps bring much needed business to the local Tajik economy.

Each tour helps improve the livelihoods of many Pamiri families. These warm and hospitable people are already eagerly struggling to increase their earning potential. They work hard to offer unique products and services to the rare foreign traveler who visits their pristine and beautiful homeland.

What rewards, if any, are you offering to your supporters?

Film Exploring Militarization Of Police Premiers At SXSW

This post was originally produced for Forbes.

Documentary filmmaker Scott Christopherson and his directorial partner Brad Barber have been invited to premier their film at the SXSW Film Festival. The riveting film, Peace Officer, was inspired by the case of a former County Sheriff whose son-in-law was killed by the SWAT team he formed decades earlier. [Note, Christopherson is my wife’s niece’s husband.]

Christopherson shared an early version of the completed film with me to review. It is an extraordinary documentary, as compelling as any feature film I’ve seen, outshining masters of the genre like Morgan Spurlock and Michael Moore. The film is aided by a dynamic true-life character, former Sheriff William Lawrence.

Commenting on the film’s controversial topic, Christopherson said, “The militarization of police is very complex and challenging. The culture of many police forces in the U.S. plays a role in how police act. There is a difference and a connection between the militarization of police and the culture of police. In many ways, those two ideas are connected. The increase in the number of SWAT raids in America since the 1970s is astonishing.”

William Lawrence in Peace Officer

Barber and Christopherson are crowdfunding on Kickstarter, where it was recently named the campaign a “staff pick.”

On Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 3:00 Eastern, Christopherson will join me for a live discussion about the film, the crowdfunding campaign and upcoming premier of Peace Officer. Tune in here then to watch the interview live.

More about Peace Officer:

Peace Officer is a documentary about the increasingly militarized state of American police as told through the story of Dub Lawrence, a former sheriff who established his rural state’s first SWAT team only to see that same unit kill his son-in-law in a controversial standoff 30 years later. Driven by an obsessed sense of mission, Dub uses his own investigation skills to uncover the truth in this and other recent officer-involved shootings in his community, while tackling larger questions about the changing face of peace officers nationwide.

Christopherson’s bio:

As an undergraduate Scott worked for Ross McElwee at Harvard University on his film In Paraguay. Ross helped guide Scott’s first film titled Only the Pizza Man Knows, which was broadcast internationally for over a year on the satellite cable network BYUtv. After his undergraduate work Scott worked as the Documentary Arts Director/Instructor for Spy Hop Productions and the Sundance Institute’s youth documentary workshops. His students’ films went on to win multiple awards locally and internationally and were nominated as the top short film in Utah two consecutive years. While living in San Francisco for graduate school, Scott shot, directed, and edited over 20 short films for Project Runway’s season six website. Scott received his MFA in documentary cinema from San Francisco State University and he also earned an MA degree in Anthropology from UW-Madison. In the summer of 2014 he was featured on the BBC World News for a documentary project he created on the Scottish referendum vote. He is currently an Assistant Professor of documentary film at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX.

Help Research to Beat Skin & Lung Cancer

Matthias Piesche is a young scientist working to cure cancer.. He is raising money on GoFundMe to advance his research. Recently, I caught up with Matthias to learn more about the effort; here’s what he told me:

What is the social benefit you hope to achieve with or through your crowdfunding campaign?

Too many people die through cancer. Investigating novel ideas is important to find better treatment strategies. However, the funding situation through the traditional funding agencies is bad, especially for young scientists. Budget cuts and reducing support for young scientists from 18% (1983) to 3% (2010) results in losing great young scientists for academia. Therefore, great ideas will never be evaluated. With my campaign I want to raise money to investigate a novel approach to beat skin and lung cancer. It will combine standard cancer treatments with immunotherapy. This combined therapy functions similar to a vaccine: An individual’s immune system gets stimulated to develop immunity to its cancer cells with the result that more cancer patients will survive their cancer.

How much money are you hoping to raise and why? How much have you raised so far?

I am planning to raise 50,000 EURO. The money will be spend solely for laboratory expenses (e.g.,chemicals, cell culture, plastic ware) to evaluate the novel treatment idea.

Whom are you trying to help with your project and why?

Cancer still needs a cure. With this project I want to help to find a cure for cancer patients that one day the diagnosis of cancer will not be a death sentence anymore.

New Crowdfunding Platform Using Shoes as Currency

New website allows user to raise funds with shoes instead of credit cards

Orlando, Fla.(February 4, 2015) – Funds2Orgs, a for-profit social enterprise, is reinventing crowdfunding with the launch of “Shoe Funding.” On Funds2Orgs’s new website entrepreneurs and others hoping to raise funds for a special endeavor can earn money by collecting new and gently used shoes.

Here’s how it works: Groups and individuals run national campaigns asking supporters to pledge a certain number of pairs of shoes to donate. These shoes can be dropped off at a local collection center or a mailing label can be printed. Once the shoes are collected, Funds2Orgs pays the fundraiser for each donated pair.

Funds2Orgs has been organizing shoe drives to support micro enterprises in developing countries since its inception in 2013, but this new web-based crowdfunding platform enables users to collect shoes across the U.S., as opposed to just in their own city. Local “ShoeFunding” campaigns have already raised more than $1 million for schools, charities and religious groups in a little over a year.

“In the past, those hoping to raise money needed to ask others to dig into their wallets for support, but now they can simply dig into their closet,” said Funds2Orgs founder and CEO Wayne Elsey. “Not everyone has money to spare, but most have at least one pair of shoes they can part with.”

Campaigns are managed on Participants create customized fundraiser webpages to include information on their fundraising mission, goals and to share images, videos and progress with their followers.

Ideal “ShoeFunding” drives might include:

  • Schools, churches and nonprofits funding new programs, mission trips, class trips, equipment or facilities
  • Entrepreneurs looking for seed capital to fund a new business, microenterprise, invention or endeavor
  • Individuals looking to support people in need or special causes

Take Heather Beam, a mother who utilized the Funds2Orgs shoe drive program to help fund the costly process of adopting a child from the Philippines. In six months, Heather collected $2,500 towards adopting 14-year-old Christine, who will be joining the Beam family in May.

The good news is, once the donated shoes are received, Funds2Orgs will then sell them for a nominal fee to budding entrepreneurs in developing nations, such as Haiti and Guatemala, to resell for their own micro enterprises.
