Hot For Hope Celebrates 1 Year & 100 Deliveries

Press Release – San Marino, CA September 2016: When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, it can be a very scary time for not only the patient, but also for his or her children. While resources for cancer patients are abundant, there are far fewer resources for kids dealing with the stress of one parent being sick, the other being stressed, and the uncertainty of what lies ahead. San Marino residents Michael “Mikey” (10) and Emily (9) Yessaian, decided in September 2015 that they wanted to do something to help. Creating Hot for Hope was their solution. Through a series of early-morning coffee and hot chocolate sales to parents and students from their school, Mikey and Emily raised enough money to provide 100 Hot for Hope care packages to California kids.

Each Hot for Hope care package contains a fluffy, comforting teddy bear and a book titled, “When Someone You Love Has Cancer: A Guide to Help Kids Cope” by Alaric Lewis that explains cancer in a child-friendly way. Kits have been distributed to children of patients at Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, LAC-USC and UCLA.

“Our mom (Jenny Yessaian, an RN and Portfolio Account Speicalist for Novartis Oncology) works with lots of doctors who help people with cancer, so my sister and I would always hear stories about people being sick. We came up with the idea for Hot for Hope together. A lot of our friends have helped us by buying from our coffee & hot cocoa stand before school, coming to a fundraising party we had at our house, and helping to put together care packages. We hope to grow a lot next year- our goal is to distribute 500 care packages to kids all over the country!” states Mikey Yessaian.

Hot for Hope’s Coffee & Hot Chocolate stands have rotating locations that are posted on as well as Twitter. All coffee has been donated by Jones Coffee Roasters, Pasadena.

5 Key Attributes to Look for in a Startup Founder

Seed Equity Ventures is a sponsor of the Your Mark on the World Center, which publishes

You can download an audio podcast here or subscribe via iTunes.

Ordinary investors can now invest in startups as a result of the belated implementation of the JOBS Act in May. As you start thinking about investing in startups, one key is to identify an entrepreneur you can back.

Todd Crosland, CEO of our sponsor Seed Equity Ventures, invests in startups along with investors who use the platform. He is an accomplished entrepreneur himself. He recently wrote a blog post about the five key attributes to look for in a startup founder. I’m sharing them here with permission.

1. Passion

When an entrepreneur is pitching you his or her business, their passion for the venture should be apparent from the time they open their mouth. They need to be fully committed to the mission and exemplify that they will do whatever it takes to see it succeed.

2. Experience

Has the founder started a company before? How successful was it? If he or she was able to grow a successful business prior to this venture, they know the ropes better than a first-time founder and have proven they have the dedication it takes to see a company endure.

3. Adaptability

Plans and challenges change frequently while building a company. Someone who can adapt and focus on the need of the customer, rather than refuse to abandon the original idea, will be more suited to build a winning company.

4. Persistence

Acquiring customers and making sales is not an easy task when a company is getting off the ground. When the founder is likely one of just a few employees, if not the only one, they will need to be persistent, tenacious and motivated to keep the company moving forward. Some will want to throw in the towel after hearing “no” several times. A successful founder will keep pushing through until they hear “yes.”

5. Communication

If you are to be an investor in their company, you want a founder who will be able to communicate issues and how he or she plans to solve them effectively. A founder should be in touch with his or her investors regularly, providing updates on the company and its progress.

On Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 4:00 Eastern, Todd will join me here for a live discussion about these five keys and how they influence investment decisions. Tune in here then to watch the interview live. Post questions in the comments below or tweet questions before the interview to @devindthorpe.

Packed with Purpose Revolutionizes Gifting with Curated Gift Box with Socially Conscious Products

New Indiegogo Campaign Launched to Fund Startup Dedicated to Supporting Purpose-Driven Companies through Purposeful Gift Boxes of Top-Quality Products

Press Release – CHICAGO – September 27, 2016Packed with Purpose, the only hand-picked, curated gift boxes of artisanal products produced by social enterprises and purpose-driven companies nationwide, launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $30,000 by Oct. 15, 2016 to fund the revolutionary gift box truly packed with purpose.

Unlike traditional companies that support a cause by giving back either a portion of the revenues to a cause or donate an item for an item sold, Packed with Purpose scours the U.S. to curate high-quality, Eco-friendly artisan crafted products that have the greatest impact on communities in need. Packed with Purpose developed an exceptionally stringent supplier selection and social business vetting process to ensure all suppliers are continually providing the best quality of unique and sophisticated products, and reinvest their profits in order to increase their social good.

“Gift-givers often choose the hottest or priciest gift or resort to purchasing a simple gift card, but these gifts don’t elicit excitement or true gratitude by the recipient,” said Leeatt Rothschild, founder of Packed with Purpose. “I wanted to capture the heartfelt feeling of gift giving by creating a more impactful gift that not only delights the recipient, but that also creates social good; a gift that is meaningful to give and to receive. Each gift box has products that contribute to causes such as creating employment, providing job skills training, coaching at-risk youth and other valuable societal impact.”

Each gift box item is elegantly packaged and presented in a signature white and wine colored box with items securely wrapped in recycled kraft paper.

For the first box, Packed with Purpose has selected five luxurious products representing a strong network of suppliers who are dedicated to improving the lives of others, including:

  • beelove: Known for its freshly made honey and honey infused skin care products, beelove products help people facing significant barriers to employment gain valuable job skills, particularly those with histories of criminal conviction.
  • Bright Endeavors: Known for its sweet smelling soy candles, Bright Endeavors gives young mothers, who are often the victims of abuse, an opportunity to develop job skills, gain leadership and responsibility within a professional environment.
  • Sulpice Chocolate: An artisanal chocolate company and dedicated fair trade brand, all Sulpice chocolates are non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher and contain nothing artificial. A portion of the proceeds from sales benefit a nonprofit committed to fighting childhood obesity.

Packed with Purpose gift boxes are sold individually for $49 or are available through a seasonal subscription service, where a curated box of new and original products are sent every three months or four times a year. As part of the Indiegogo campaign, special rewards and tiers are offered for backers looking to purchase more than one box. Packed with Purpose is also accepting large quantity orders that can be customized for special occasions, corporate events and the holiday season.

Starting in early 2017, Packed with Purpose will unveil a variety of gift box options and begin accepting larger orders from their website at In addition to specially curated boxes, Packed with Purpose will have a dedicated team devoted to tailoring and personalizing individual gift boxes for any occasion.

Crowdfunding Climate Change Resistant Farms

Press Release – (Portage, IN) September, 14, 2016 — Green Sense Farms, the country’s largest network of commercial indoor vertical farms launched an equity crowdfunding campaign on Start Engine to share their unique offering with their community.

The Campaign which launched last Thursday reached their goal in just one day, the campaign can be found here,

Green Sense Farms grows produce indoors which drastically reduces land use by growing on multi-level platforms. Using sustainable farming practices, the Green Sense Farms growing method has minimal impact to the environment and can grow leafy green vegetable faster than field farms with less water and pesticide, herbicide and GMO free.

According to a 2015 report by the United Nations, the world’s population size in 2050 is expected to reach 9.7 billion. While those numbers are set to increase, so are rising surface temperatures and worsening droughts caused by severe weather patterns. Changes in climate are already reducing the amount of arable land and rising urban populations are depleting aquifers, creating a need for more sustainable farming solutions.

Founder and CEO of Green Sense Farms, Robert Colangelo, has already set the wheels in motion for this much needed solution. “We’re not subject to rain or drought. We precisely control the indoor environment, to create the perfect conditions for our plants to grow year-round, every single day.”

Another benefit of growing indoors in a climate-controlled environment is that you can harvest large quantities of leafy green produce each week. By locating these farms at or near produce distribution centers and on institutional campuses wherever large volume of meals are served daily, produce is fresher and the miles food travels from the farm to the table is reduced. This truly is the future of not just green farming, but a farming solution to meet growing populations and changing global weather patterns.

Colangelo now invites investors become a part of the Green Sense Farms community and family “Green Sense Farms has been the fortunate recipient of numerous stories about our exciting innovative indoor vertical farming technology. All this press has generated many inquiries from individuals asking how they can invest in our sustainable farm. We’re pleased to announce that the recently released crowdfunding regulations now allow for individuals to make direct equity investments in growth companies like ours. This is your chance to own a piece of Green Sense Farms. Just as Green Sense Farms has disrupted produce distribution and cut out the middleman, the new crowdfunding regulations have democratized the capital markets, allowing individuals the opportunity to take advantage of public offerings without the use of traditional stock brokers.”

The crowdfund will be hosted on for an estimated duration of 60 days.

Green Sense Farms is located in Portage, Indiana—40 miles outside of Chicago and has created innovation partnerships with Philips, Hortimax, Rijk Zwaan, Desert Aire and Dramm. The company has also formed a business partnership with Infinite Herbs. Find more information on their website at

Green Sense Farms is the country’s largest commercial indoor vertical farm. The company provides nutritious and delicious produce that’s good for people and the planet. Because Green Sense Farms creates conditions that are always perfect for growing, they’re able to harvest year-round, using a fraction of the land, water, and fertilizer of traditional field farming. These sustainable farming practices make Green Sense Farms a local solution to a global challenge.

A Small Tibetan Family Needs Your Help to Open a Storefront

A Small Tibetan Family has started a kickstarter campaign to get funding for opening a storefront in the Raleigh area for handcrafted Tibetan beads, pendants and jewelry supplies. Recently I caught up with Tsering L to learn more about the effort; here’s what she told me:

What is the social benefit you hope to achieve with or through your crowdfunding campaign?

I make traditional & modern style Tibetan Jewelry & crafts in Nepal. I am responsible for creating this cottage industry of materials & supplies that are used in my designs & supports many Tibetan & Nepalese artisan families working with us.

How much money are you hoping to raise and why? How much have you raised so far?

My goal is to raise $30,000 on Kickstarter to support opening a storefront for my designs. Funds will be used for securing the retail space for approximately 6 months, furnishings, rewards for the backers, commissions & fees,  & anything left over will be used for products.

Whom are you trying to help with your project and why?

My project helps Tibetan refugee artisans & Nepalese artisans. Most of them have not had any schooling and are only skilled in producing these craft supplies.

What rewards, if any, are you offering to your supporters?

My rewards are all listed on my Kickstarter project page.

Tampon Tribe To Launch Thursday

Setting New Standards in Organic Tampon Subscription Services

Press Release – SANTA MONICA, Calif. (September 19, 2016). The U.S.’ first customizable certified-organic cotton and plastic-free tampon monthly subscription service, Tampon Tribe, will hit the market Thursday, September 22, with an Indiegogo campaign that sees prices cut to $6 a month, including delivery.

Responding to their own search for convenient and affordable organic cotton tampons that are kind to the earth as well as their bodies, founders Jennifer Eden and Gaby Alves have created much more than an online subscription business. Their Tribe is an inclusive ecosphere with social impact at its core, and a goal to change the way society approaches periods, women’s heath, and the environment.

“Our mission is to provide easy access to affordable organic tampons and pads to all women,” Eden said. “We believe that everyone should be able to choose what they put in their bodies.”

“I also constantly, I mean constantly, run out of tampons each month,” Eden explained. “So I decided to combine my needs, wants, hopes for the environment and the planet, with the convenience of a home-delivered organic cotton tampon subscription service.”

“Everything about Tampon Tribe is focused on sustainability,” she added. “Our applicators are a smooth cardboard and our packaging is made from recycled materials – no plastic. Period.”

Both Eden and Alves said that they couldn’t believe the scarcity of organic feminine hygiene on the market, and the excessive use of plastics that exists in the few organic options that are available.

“The average women throws 7,300 plastic applicators in the trash in their lifetime,” Alves said. “Multiply that by at least 64 million women in the U.S. alone who get their period, that’s tons and tons of trash going into our landfills and water-ways, that could easily be avoided.”

Tampon Tribe’s service begins with a first month delivery of organic cotton tampons that arrive in a cute burlap bag, designed to fit neatly inside a bathroom cabinet, or sit proudly on the shelf. Subsequent monthly “refill” packs arrive in recycled paper bags in an effort to cut environmental impact at every corner.

Each month’s delivery is customizable online, to match with your flow, with a mix of regular, super, and super-plus available. Tampon Tribe also offers organic cotton pantiliners and overnight pads, as well as thin and regular pads that are organic cotton, and toxin and chemical free.

Charity partners are voted on by the Tribe, with events and social interaction part of the ethos of the company.

“Together we can make the world a better place,” Eden said. “We are creating jobs for people who need a second or third chance in life too, employing men and women through retraining programs so that they can change their lives and their kids’ lives for the better.”
