Blackbaud Anticipates Record-Breaking Donations on #GivingTuesday 2016

Blackbaud’s #GivingTuesday data shows consistent double-digit, year-over-year growth in online donations, benefitting thousands of charities, nonprofits and communities worldwide

Press Release – Charleston, S.C. (October 11, 2016) — #GivingTuesday, the philanthropic movement encouraging charitable giving following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is expected to have its most successful year to date in 2016. As a founding partner of the movement, Blackbaud (NASDAQ: BLKB) the world’s leading cloud software company powering social good, has tracked the data behind the dollars since the movement’s creation.

The global day of giving takes place on November 29 and is fueled by social media. Blackbaud is proud to power a majority of the online donations made that day in the United States through its work with approximately 35,000 social good organizations.

“Blackbaud has seen consistent double-digit, year-over-year growth in online donations on #GivingTuesday,” said Mike Gianoni, president and CEO. “In 2012 we processed $10.1 million in online donations, and last year’s donations hit nearly $40 million. With nearly 300 percent growth, if #GivingTuesday remains on this trajectory, we anticipate it will have a record-breaking year in 2016.”

According to Blackbaud’s #GivingTuesday Trends Report, which analyzed data from more than 4,300 organizations, online and smart phone donations continue to trend upwards as well.

“The report shows that online donations on #GivingTuesday grew by 52 percent, and 17 percent of donors used a mobile device,” said Steve MacLaughlin, director of Analytics, Blackbaud. “The rate of mobile giving began accelerating at 3 p.m. and peaked at 10 p.m. EST, when 42 percent of all online donors were using their phones or tablets.”

Additional findings from Blackbaud’s analysis of #GivingTuesday trends:

  • Faith-based, education, and human services organizations receive the largest percentage of #GivingTuesday online donations.
  • Large organizations have received the most online donations on #GivingTuesday, but this trend is shifting.
  • The average online gift amount was $137 per donation last year, an increase of 6%. Online donations tend to be larger than traditional direct mail gifts and #GivingTuesday donors also show this behavior.
  • Mobile giving on #GivingTuesday continues to increase and echoes other trends in smart phone use by donors

“Many charities use #GivingTuesday as a launch pad to boost donations through the end of the year, when non-profits typically see spikes in financial contributions and volunteer hours,” added Gianoni. “Blackbaud is working with top charities including The Salvation Army, Feeding America and the World Wildlife Fund to optimize the potential for #GivingTuesday donations through website redevelopment, mobile optimization, social listening, targeted online fundraising and increased use of data analytics.”

Blackbaud will provide key reporting, trend data and commentary throughout #GivingTuesday 2016 to assess the growth and impact of the movement. Keeping with the spirit of the season, Blackbaud will waive its administration fees for any U.S. donations made on #GivingTuesday via Blackbaud’s crowdfundraising solution, everydayhero®.

#GivingTuesday is celebrated annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. The philanthropic movement began in 2012 as a way to encourage people to make donations to charities, volunteer, and generally support humanitarian efforts to improve the world. Since its inception, #GivingTuesday has engaged over 10,000 nonprofit organizations worldwide and impacted over a million individuals in more than 70 different countries.

‘No Woman Left Behind’ Campaign Aims To Bring Jewish Mothers from Disadvantaged Countries to Israel

In JWRP’s new crowd-funding campaign, every dollar donated will be matched

Press Release – NEW YORK, Oct. 10The Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (JWRP), which brings Jewish mothers on life-changing “Momentum” Israel trips, launched a new campaign to help disadvantaged women from around the world experience the trips as well.

The JWRP’s “No Woman Left Behind” campaign was created to bring Jewish mothers in countries deemed “at-risk” – where anti-Semitism is resurging or Jewish heritage is declining. Among the countries JWRP is targeting are France, Poland, Hungary and Romania. JWRP supporters Debra and David Magerman are also providing a matching dollar-for-dollar grant, doubling each dollar donated.

The campaign, which launched last week, has already raised more than $98,000 toward a $250,000 goal, which will enable the organization to bring more than 80 additional women to Israel. Since 2009, the JWRP, in partnership with 150 partner organizations in 26 countries, has brought more than 8,000 women to Israel, and, starting in 2014, has partnered with Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. The organization aims to bring another 3,500 Jewish mothers to Israel, including those from at-risk communities, in 2017.

“Momentum trips provide Jewish mothers with soul-stirring Israel experiences, enabling them to return home and transform their families and the wider Jewish community,” said Lori Palatnik, the JWRP’s founding director. “While we have already taken thousands of women to Israel, we want to leave no woman behind. This campaign will enable us to embrace so many more of our sisters around the world.”

One Momentum trip participant from Moscow, Laura Troyanovky, said her journey to Israel with JWRP brought her much closer to her Jewish roots. “After this trip, we started keeping Shabbat with the kids, started baking challah and learning more about our heritage.”

Democracy wins Wall Street – “You are the few but we are the many”

This is a guest post from Legion M founders Paul Scanlan and Jeff Annison.

The sequel to Occupy Wall Street came out this summer, and unlike the original drama full of burning cars and angry protests, this one came as a feel-good drama with pure, hopeful, positive democratic reform.

The story line began Monday, May 16, 2016, with the SEC kicking off summer with a historic breakthrough for entrepreneurs, the public, and potentially the U.S. economy. They call it the JOBS Act. If you haven’t heard about it, you soon will.

The JOBS Act passed through Congress with rare bipartisan support and is amending the antiquated securities laws that have rigged our financial system in favor of the rich for more than 80 years. At its core, the JOBS Act is enabling equity crowdfunding which gives the general public the opportunity to participate in early stage financing and investing, a domain that until now had been exclusive to venture capitalists and high-net-worth individuals (accredited investors).

Passing the JOBS Act may not seem like big news, but when these new laws collide with a rising distrust of the financial industry and a millennial-infused vigor to rethink everything, the result could be a transformative new era of business. This is the follow up to Occupy Wall Street, where protests, complaints, and aggravation are replaced with street-smart initiative, and grass roots collaboration to align communities of people together to support the next generation of companies. These new companies are built by the people and for the people from day one, and they have the power to be a new economic force in America.

The Potential

Imagine the potential for these new companies, empowered by their legions of shareholders to disrupt, empower and reinvent entire industries. Imagine shareholders getting involved, investing in something they have a passion for and working together as a community to support the company they own together.

A flock of companies have already launched their JOBS Act round of funding this year, many of them announced on May 16 when the crowdfunding rule came into effect.

The Wealth Gap

Until now, the general public not meeting the SEC definition of accredited investors were only allowed to support startups like this through platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. By those traditional means, campaign backers were essentially donating to these companies or prepurchasing the product. Appreciation was demonstrated by way of t-shirts and tote bags but not stock. Accredited investors, on the other hand, could own equity and participate as shareholders in the companies. With the JOBS Act, that power to realize a gain from an investment in a start up is open to everyone.

A telling example is Oculus, the now famous VR start up that raised $2.4M on Kickstarter and less than two years later sold to Facebook for $2B. While many of the accredited investors that backed the company early on did quite well after the acquisition, their loyal Kickstarter supporters got nothing.

The Risks

To be clear, it’s not all upside and optimism. These investments are early stage which means they’re high-risk, high-reward propositions. More than 90 percent of startups fail, and when they do, it usually means the investors lost most, if not all, of their money. But when they hit, they hit jackpot big. But before you think about going all in on any one company take a lesson from the wealthy venture capitalists and spread the risk across several investments. And ultimately, do not invest more than you can afford to lose.

The Future

This is only the beginning, a preview of what’s to come. The JOBS Act will lead to a whole new breed of entrepreneurs and revitalized industries. We expect to see lots of new companies created many of them in industries long overdue for disruption. The JOBS Act will bring innovators and consumers together in a way that has been unprecedented and spark the next huge wave of innovation and growth.

Legion M is the world’s first FAN-OWNED entertainment studio. We work with top Hollywood creators to develop and monetize content together with FANS. With Legion M, FANS own the company, FANS get behind the scenes, and if we are successful—FANS share the rewards! Legion M has been eagerly waiting for the JOBS Act to pass, and we were ready with our plans once it did. We set out to re-imagine the entertainment industry with a new company that would be owned by passionate fans with a mission to create the most influential new entertainment company on the planet. We have seen an immediate response with our audience as fans enthusiastically flocked to our website to get involved in something cool, to contribute to something they were passionate about and to have fun in a community of like-minded peers. But it’s more than that…for us, having fans as our shareholders isn’t just good fun, its also good business. The M in our logo has a bar over it to represent our long-term goal to have one million shareholders. We set the minimum investment at $100 to allow as many fans as possible to participate. We aren’t looking for Wall Street investors and we don’t want anyone investing their life savings. If all our shareholders invested just $100, we would have $100 Million to invest in movies, TV shows and other projects. Each of those projects would have one million fans emotionally and financially invested before they start production.

Legion M isn’t just a company, it’s a movement. We are pioneering what we think will be a crowd driven-renaissance of business with the potential to shape the future of our economy. Join us at

Footage Foundation Relaunches Crowdfunding Campaign Envisioning Largest Global Initiative and Platform for Young Women Refugee Voice

Press Release – NEW YORK, October 6, 2016 — From Wednesday October 12th through Friday October 21st, Footage Foundation relaunches its crowdfunding campaign on CauseVox to amplify voices of young women refugees. Addressing the refugee crisis in Europe and working toward the Sustainable Development Goals, Footage launched the campaign in May, calling for investment in the expansion of its award-winning Girl-talk-Girl program, and voice methods to young women refugees. Footage is now requesting further support and announcing the program as Her{connect}Her, which is set to be the largest global initiative and platform for young women refugee voice, connection, and transformation.

Girls’ and young women’s vulnerability sharply increases during times of crisis, conflict, and displacement. Gender-specific responses, particularly, safe spaces to address the unique needs and social isolation of girls and young women, as well as cultivate their compassion, resilience, and potential as change agents, make a difference, but are lacking. Accessing the voices of displaced women and girls is the most fundamental step in responding to their needs and the escalation of violence in their lives (IRC).

Her{connect}Her, a multimedia storytelling program, engages girls, young women, and communities in recognizing their shared humanity, assessing their needs, and amplifying their voices through narrative and dialogue. Backed by rigorous research, Her{connect}Her is a scalable, measurable program, which offers young women employment, builds their ICT and leadership skills, and empowers their futures while in turn, providing the public, policy makers, and other NGOs in-depth reports and insights into the often unheard experiences, strengths, needs, and perspectives of displaced girls and young women.

About Footage Foundation:

Footage designs impactful, sustainable programs that use local technology and expressive multimedia tools to bring the underrepresented voices and experiences of young people, particularly young women, into conversations on the world’s most challenging issues.

Ready for Take-Off: Jetpack Aviation Set To Raise £300,000 on Seedrs

  • World’s first jetpack slated for public launch in 2017
  • Designed by three time Academy Award winner, Nelson Tyler
  • In negotiations with the US military on how the JB-10 could be deployed in the field
  • In discussion with one of the largest sports marketing companies about sponsoring a series of jetpack races
  • Plans to develop ‘JetPack Top Gun’ experience centres for thrill-seekers across the globe
  • The launch was marked the UK’s first ever JetPack flight across the Royal Victoria Dock at dawn today

Press Release – London, 5th October 2016: A company dedicated to delivering a Jetson’s vision of flight by jetpack and other new forms of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) personal aircraft, has today launched its first equity crowdfunding round on Seedrs. JetPack Aviation aims to raise £300,000 and will invest the funds in further research and development for its JB-10 JetPack and VTOL aircraft.

Company founders David Mayman and Nelson Tyler have worked together for the past decade to make the JB-10 JetPack a reality. Slated for public launch in 2017, the JB-10 has a proven track record and is regularly demonstrated to huge public acclaim by aviation buff Mayman.

With excitement building round one the most iconic product launches and media coverage of a flight in New York being shared millions of times, the JB-10 is not just a gimmick but has a solid technological and scientific background behind it. Its designer Nelson Tyler has been a successful and highly recognised inventor and product developer for 55 years and amongst many accolades has won three Academy Awards for Technical Achievement in the Motion Picture Industry.

Nelson and David are supported by a group of specialists with expertise ranging from turbine engine design to electrical and computer engineering. JetPack Aviation is now in negotiations with the US military on how the JB-10 could be deployed in the field. For instance this could be in extraction situations where a soldier needs to be rescued from behind enemy lines. Nelson and David also have a research and development agreement in place with the U.S. Special Operations Command to develop a four-turbine jet pack that will lift twice the weight (about 700 pounds).

JetPack Aviation is also in discussion with one of the largest sports marketing companies about sponsoring a series of jetpack races. There are even plans to develop ‘JetPack Top Gun’ experience centres for thrill-seekers across the globe.

David Mayman, CEO at JetPack Aviation, said: “A lot of us spent time in our youth fantasising about what it would be like to follow Buck Rogers up into the air with our very own jetpacks. We are getting a lot closer to launching a commercial product but there is still much further that we can take our design and ideas, so we want to give the crowdfunding community a once in a lifetime opportunity to invest in turning a dream into reality.”

Jeff Lynn, CEO and co-founder of Seedrs, said: “Flying to work with a jetpack strapped to your back may be everyone’s favourite science fiction fantasy alongside teleportation and personal space travel, but this is a serious scientific invention that could have huge implications for the aviation sector. This funding round is a chance for everyone to get on board with further development of the JB-10 and we are so excited to welcome David Mayman and JetPack Aviation onto Seedrs.”

JetPack Aviation is now live on Seedrs:

Sarasota Community Benefits from Impressive Giving Challenge

Press Release – Austin, Texas (Oct. 4, 2016) – Sarasota nonprofits rallied the community to break its own record as the highest grossing 24-hour giving day in all of Florida and the Southeastern United States. The fifth annual Giving Challenge raised $13.39 million for Sarasota nonprofits and was hosted by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and powered by Kimbia, a leading provider of online fundraising solutions and crowdfunding events. The Giving Challenge took place noon Sept. 20 to noon Sept. 21 impacting 559 participating nonprofits.

This year saw an impressive 75 percent increase in participation compared with last year. Over 63,000 gifts were donated from over 45,000 online donors with an average gift of $90. Of the amount raised, $5.5 million was donated online — $2 million more than online results of last year. The remainder came from $7.5 million in matching funds donated by The Patterson Foundation, who matched first-time donors two to one and returning donors one to one with donations up to $100 per organization.

“The Giving Challenge is a way for the entire community to come together to support local nonprofits that have demonstrated transparency by having updated profiles in The Giving Partner, our local online nonprofit resource,” said Roxie Jerde, president and CEO at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. “You don’t have to donate a huge amount to be the one to make a difference, and that is what these events have shown year after year – every gift counts. We’d like to thank all of our community’s donors, nonprofits, volunteers, The Patterson Foundation’s generous giving incentives, partner foundations and technology partner, Kimbia, for making this event possible.”

Another key contributor to the 2016 Giving Challenge success is the amount of work that participating local nonprofits, big and small, put into developing campaigns, rallying local businesses and media to help share their stories about the impact they are making in the local communities they serve.

“The Community Foundation of Sarasota County knows how to host a successful giving day. In-person events, matching funds, prizes, nonprofit participation and marketing are all key ingredients that Sarasota has fine-tuned over the years,” said Lori Finch, Kimbia’s vice president of community giving. “We are honored to have been their partner for the last five years and help support them in their mission to catalyze local giving.”
