Two young women raising money for crucial programs and services to benefit students with dyslexia, visual impairment and other print disabilities – now challenging others to join their team
Press Release – More than 10 million students in the United States struggle to read the printed word, due to disabilities like dyslexia or blindness/visual impairment.
For nearly 70 years, one national nonprofit organization has been helping students and individuals with visual and learning disabilities. Learning Ally, formerly known as Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, started in the attic of the New York Public Library to help injured WWII soldiers pursue college. It now serves over 230,000 visually impaired and dyslexic students in nearly 10,000 schools across the US, through their library of more than 80,000 human volunteer narrated audiobooks, and additional advocacy programs and services for students, families and school districts.
Now two remarkable young women, one who has dyslexia and one who is blind – who both found help through Learning Ally – are passionately taking steps to raise money for the organization that helped them find success, so they can give the gift of reading to students who still struggle. Their goal is to inspire others to join their team and donate to Learning Ally.
11-year-old NJ student Gabriela Shulman – who has dyslexia – struggled to read and to fit in for years. School was torture for her, and reading seemed like it would be out of reach. Gabriela’s Mom, Darcy Shulman, began looking for help for her daughter; and according to Darcy, “That’s when we found Learning Ally. The human-narrated audiobooks changed her life. She has become a reader. She has become confident. She has become excited about books. Learning Ally has also changed me, I am no longer afraid for her.” Gabriela added, “I can read everything my classmates and friends are reading and I never feel left out.”
Gabriela feels so strongly about the benefits of Learning Ally that she wants every child with a reading disability to find hope like she did. She spent her summer raising money for the organization, and has set up a fundraising page, so others may join her team, and help her continue to raise money for students in need. “Learning Ally gave me the gift of reading,” said Gabriela, “and I want to give that gift to other kids like me.”
25-year-old Abigail Lanier has not let her blindness stop her from doing one single thing in her life. Originally from North Carolina, she now lives and works in New York City. She is joined on her daily commute to work by her service dog, Kit.
Abigail is also an accomplished triathlete and endurance runner, with the NYC and Boston Marathons under her belt. She recently completed her latest triathlon and earlier in the month, finished her latest 26.2 mile marathon in New York City.
Abigail, who has been blind since the age of four, began using Learning Ally in college and felt so passionately about the programs and services the organization provides, that she herself joined the organization in 2015. She now serves as the Mentor Coordinator for the Learning Ally College Success Program, a unique mentorship and research based curriculum program designed specifically for students attending institutions of higher education who are blind or visually impaired. The Learning Ally College Success Program comes at no cost to enrolled students, through the generosity of foundations and private donors.
“For some of our students, their mentors are the first successful blind people that they’ve met,” said Abigail. “This program is effective because students are able to connect with a person who has been there and done it.”

Our daughter, Avishi has been diagnosed with MPS Type VI (Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 6) – a very rare, debilitating & life-threatening genetic disorder. If left untreated, expected life span would be age 20 to 25 years with deteriorating body condition every year.
Unfortunately she cannot receive treatment for this rare disease in India, as there are no expert medical centers with experience, cutting-edge technology and research for MPS. We need to quickly move her to UMC Utrecht (Netherlands) for required treatment. The hospital cost is (1,94,000 Euros or Rs. 1.47 crores). Add another Rs. 48 lakhs towards living expenses for 1-year at Netherlands. Total cost of treatment is Rs. 1.94 crores approximately.

This announcement comes directly after Beauhurst announced that Seedrs has retained its title as the UK’s most active investor in private companies across 2016, having completed 122 deals by the end of Q3. This is more than any other investor during the period according to a report released by the independent research firm.1

7 campaigns launch after unique startup prep at Sawyer Business School
Press Release – BOSTON — Suffolk University has introduced one of the nation’s first experiential courses on crowdfunding, where students are launching campaigns to fund their own start-up companies through Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
Students in the Sawyer Business School class will launch crowdfunding campaigns the week of Nov. 14, coinciding with National Entrepreneurship Month. Startup products and services include an almond-based Alfredo sauce, a high-protein coffee product, a fishing tackle box/cooler combination and a yoga studio on wheels.
“While a few other universities are discussing crowdfunding as part of traditional course content, the real-world approach to this course makes it different,” said Management and Entrepreneurship Professor Jennifer Dinger. “Suffolk students in this class are learning how to turn their business ideas into action, and they are going after the funding to support those enterprises.”
The course expands on the foundation of knowledge and skills honed throughout the Sawyer Business School curriculum, while fast tracking entrepreneurial activity through startups and the raising of capital.

The concept for the crowdfunding course came out of conversations between Dinger and Professor Chaim Letwin, a colleague in the Sawyer Business School’s Management and Entrepreneurship department. Dinger and Letwin both study crowdfunding platforms and how campaign components relate to people’s decisions to contribute money to a particular project. The course looks at factors that lead to crowdfunding success, including the idea, the pitch and the prototype.
“Small business and innovation are critical to the health and vibrancy of the economy,” Dinger said. “Experiential courses like this are aimed at accelerating the startup launch process and increasing the rate of startup businesses among our most promising young adults.”

Solar and RF powered smart irrigation system launches on Indiegogo
Press Release – (Los Angeles / Taipei, November 8, 2016) – Today Hugreen launched an Indiegogo campaign for its flagship product, Gnome. This solar and radio frequency powered smart irrigation system remotely controls and monitors gardens and farms. Four starter kits are available, beginning at $120.

Gnome is the only IoT sensor that can measure fertilizer level and soil moisture concurrently. Gnome uses industrial level Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) technology to measure the presence of fertilizer and uses that data to get an unbiased soil moisture level, which is typically only found in more expensive non-smart sensors.
Hugreen founder Clement Lee is a solar researcher and engineer who led major projects for an international solar tech corporation. “I quit my job and started building rooftop gardens in Hong Kong, but wasn’t pleased with the tech solutions available to monitor and adjust irrigation as there was a lot of unnecessary waste,” he said. “So I decided to combine my background in engineering and passion for sustainable farming to create solar-powered technology that makes is possible for everyone to grow.”
Gnome’s app helps gardeners manage their plants remotely. Live updates are provided for each sensor, and users are alerted if the soil becomes too dry, or the water too warm. Users are then able to control the water system or automate timers for the valves based on soil moisture level, ultimately saving them time, money and labor.
The app also teaches gardeners how to grow new plants. “The Gnome app has a comprehensive plant database that can teach you how to optimize growing at your location,” Lee said. “Based on plant type, seasonality and location, Gnome can tell you what parameters would be best for this plant and ways you can achieve them.”

Press Release – NEW YORK (Nov. 11, 2016) – Today at 11 a.m. EST, while America’s largest traditional celebration of our veterans overtook the streets of New York City, a bold new chapter in a heralded music project honoring our military heroes was officially launched through Kickstarter.
After four years of bringing this project to live stages in clubs, concert halls, arenas, festivals and other veterans related events from New York to Philadelphia, CARRY YOU ON is finally ready for the recording studio. The “Album for Action” of 10 new original songs was written by acclaimed NYC jazz singer-songwriter Marcus Goldhaber to help bridge the disconnect between civilians and military veterans through music.
Goldhaber, a 2016 MAC Award nominee, made the announcement today (11.11 @ 11 a.m.) during his second consecutive performance in New York’s Veterans Day Parade, officially known as “America’s Parade 2016.”
“I’ve taken this project as far as I can on my own,” said Goldhaber. “Now graciously and humbly, I’m turning to Kickstarter and my friends and family and fans to help fund the production and distribution of this album, so this message can reach as many people as possible.
“I wrote this music to give civilians and veterans the confidence to begin and continue the CARRY YOU ON will include “Come Home America,” the original Goldhaber anthem he released on Veterans Day 2013. The reaction to “Come Home America,” and the live concert outreach it has since sparked, ultimately became the impetus to write and record enough songs for this upcoming album. conversation that we both so desperately need to have. I’ve seen the impact of these songs first-hand. I’ve performed for veterans and civilians in the same room.”
At one performance, a Marine came up to Goldhaber and said that after being thanked for his service so many times, and not knowing how to respond, “he now felt he had a starting point.” At another, a sailor approached Goldhaber and said that, after hearing one of his songs, she felt more comfortable knowing “part of her story was now on stage.”

This project is proud to support Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (www.iava.org), which strives to build the “New Greatest Generation” as the first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
Having shared stages with musical icons from Les Paul to Bono, Goldhaber “finds the soul in each note with his no-frills approach” (People), and played before a sold-out room at the legendary Blue Note. Outside of entertaining at Manhattan’s top clubs and throughout the East Coast, he’s performed at the U.N., for Henry Kissinger, and most recently toured the U.S. in the off-Broadway hit The Wonderful Wizard of Song: The Music of Harold Arlen. For over a year, he has been in monthly residence at Bar Thalia at Symphony Space on the Upper East Side, “stripping the Great American Songbook to the bone” hosting “Mostly Marcus.”
