Stars to appear in television and digital spots encouraging people to support St. Jude while holiday shopping

Press Release – (MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Nov. 17, 2016) – This holiday season, Jennifer Aniston, Sofia Vergara, Michael Strahan, Jimmy Kimmel and Luis Fonsi will once again join St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® National Outreach Director Marlo Thomas in promoting the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign. Each celebrity supporter will star alongside St. Jude patients in national television spots and digital shorts encouraging people to support St. Jude while holiday shopping.

Now in its thirteenth year, the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign has transformed the holiday season into a time of giving thanks by raising awareness and funds for the ongoing battle to end childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Throughout November and December, consumers are asked to support the campaign by shopping at more than 70 leading national brands and sharing what they #GiveThanks for using social media.

“Every year the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign helps transform the holiday season into a time when we can all make a huge difference and help save the lives of precious children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases,” said Jennifer Aniston. “St. Jude holds a special place in my heart and I am honored to lend my voice in raising awareness to support St. Jude’s lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children in communities across America and around the world.”

The national television commercials will debut Thanksgiving week on Monday Nov. 21 and run through the end of the year. In addition to national awareness commercials, celebrity friends will support St. Jude on #GivingTuesday and throughout the campaign by sharing what they #GiveThanks for.

“We are deeply grateful for our incredible friends who lend their time and talents to support St. Jude,” said Marlo Thomas, National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “It means so much to us that year after year they open their hearts to the children of St. Jude. We are blessed to have their unwavering support and their generous spirit that helps St. Jude raise the funds that allows our doctors and scientists to continue their groundbreaking research, which leads to lifesaving treatments. And lets us keep my father’s founding promise that no family receives a bill from St. Jude for anything — not for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.”

Supporters will also be able to purchase merchandise designed by their favorite celebrities to benefit St. Jude. For the second year, St. Jude worked with the family of Maya Angelou to design a one-of-a-kind glass lantern. St. Jude partner HSN collaborated with celebrity friends including Marlo Thomas, Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Chenoweth, Christie Brinkley, Iris Apfel, Giuliana Rancic, and more in designing a Holiday Ornament Collection.

Created in 2004 by Marlo, Terre and Tony Thomas – children of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas – the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign began as a holiday-focused fundraising effort and has grown into an annual tradition that unites celebrities, media, retail and corporate partners to support the lifesaving mission of St Jude.

The campaign’s national television spots will air on network and cable television channels, as well as online, in both English and Spanish. In addition, a star-studded St. Jude Thanks and Giving movie trailer appears in theatres nationwide – including Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark USA, Carmike Cinemas, Malco Theatres and many others. It is also featured via in-flight videos on American Airlines, in the American Way magazine, as well as in Delta Airlines’ Sky Magazine. In addition, AccentHealth, America’s leading waiting room media network, shows the St. Jude PSA in physician offices around the country. All of the spots, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, will debut online in late November.

Additional Celebrity Quotes:

“It’s so important to me to be a part of the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign because it’s a great way to help give hope to kids battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases,” said Sofia Vergara. “These beautiful children have such incredible strength and spirit. I hope everyone will join me in supporting St. Jude, as this magnificent hospital continues its groundbreaking research and life-saving treatments.”

“I have met a lot of great people in my life but the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital are so inspiring” said Michael Strahan. “St. Jude is one of my favorite places. The care they provide is unsurpassed and families don’t have to pay St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. Please join me during the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign this holiday season. Your support will help ensure that children from across America and around the world continue to benefit from the lifesaving research and treatment being done every day at St. Jude.”

“I’m excited once again to be a part of the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign and support St. Jude in its fight against childhood cancer,” said Jimmy Kimmel. “I had a lot of fun filming these spots with Isabelle, Marleigh and John Claude – all of whom are great kids. This holiday season we can help St. Jude continue to treat the toughest cases while ensuring that families never pay St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. Every little bit can help save the lives of these sweet and beautiful children.”

“It means so much to me to be a part of the St. Jude family,” said Luis Fonsi. “St. Jude is an amazing place. They share their research with the world, leading a global effort to understand, treat, and defeat childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Student with Dyslexia and Marathon Runner who is Blind Team Up with Learning Ally to Give the Gift of Reading to Students with Visual and Learning Disabilities

Two young women raising money for crucial programs and services to benefit students with dyslexia, visual impairment and other print disabilities – now challenging others to join their team

Press Release – More than 10 million students in the United States struggle to read the printed word, due to disabilities like dyslexia or blindness/visual impairment.

For nearly 70 years, one national nonprofit organization has been helping students and individuals with visual and learning disabilities. Learning Ally, formerly known as Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, started in the attic of the New York Public Library to help injured WWII soldiers pursue college. It now serves over 230,000 visually impaired and dyslexic students in nearly 10,000 schools across the US, through their library of more than 80,000 human volunteer narrated audiobooks, and additional advocacy programs and services for students, families and school districts.

Now two remarkable young women, one who has dyslexia and one who is blind – who both found help through Learning Ally – are passionately taking steps to raise money for the organization that helped them find success, so they can give the gift of reading to students who still struggle. Their goal is to inspire others to join their team and donate to Learning Ally.

11-year-old NJ student Gabriela Shulman – who has dyslexia – struggled to read and to fit in for years. School was torture for her, and reading seemed like it would be out of reach. Gabriela’s Mom, Darcy Shulman, began looking for help for her daughter; and according to Darcy, “That’s when we found Learning Ally. The human-narrated audiobooks changed her life. She has become a reader. She has become confident. She has become excited about books. Learning Ally has also changed me, I am no longer afraid for her.” Gabriela added, “I can read everything my classmates and friends are reading and I never feel left out.”

Gabriela feels so strongly about the benefits of Learning Ally that she wants every child with a reading disability to find hope like she did. She spent her summer raising money for the organization, and has set up a fundraising page, so others may join her team, and help her continue to raise money for students in need. “Learning Ally gave me the gift of reading,” said Gabriela, “and I want to give that gift to other kids like me.”

25-year-old Abigail Lanier has not let her blindness stop her from doing one single thing in her life. Originally from North Carolina, she now lives and works in New York City. She is joined on her daily commute to work by her service dog, Kit.

Abigail is also an accomplished triathlete and endurance runner, with the NYC and Boston Marathons under her belt. She recently completed her latest triathlon and earlier in the month, finished her latest 26.2 mile marathon in New York City.

Abigail, who has been blind since the age of four, began using Learning Ally in college and felt so passionately about the programs and services the organization provides, that she herself joined the organization in 2015. She now serves as the Mentor Coordinator for the Learning Ally College Success Program, a unique mentorship and research based curriculum program designed specifically for students attending institutions of higher education who are blind or visually impaired. The Learning Ally College Success Program comes at no cost to enrolled students, through the generosity of foundations and private donors.

“For some of our students, their mentors are the first successful blind people that they’ve met,” said Abigail. “This program is effective because students are able to connect with a person who has been there and done it.”

“Being an endurance athlete who is visually impaired, I find it important to support students with print disabilities. Having access to print material in other ways helps people like me be independent and feel good about ourselves. The money that people donate and raise for Learning Ally and our students, helps to create not only the audiobooks that they offer, but student empowerment programs. Learning Ally’s College Success Program helps students like me get through college, move on to careers and access print in a way that they wouldn’t be able to otherwise.”

Here’s an appeal for Avishi’s parents.

Our daughter, Avishi has been diagnosed with MPS Type VI (Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 6) – a very rare, debilitating & life-threatening genetic disorder. If left untreated, expected life span would be age 20 to 25 years with deteriorating body condition every year.

Unfortunately she cannot receive treatment for this rare disease in India, as there are no expert medical centers with experience, cutting-edge technology and research for MPS. We need to quickly move her to UMC Utrecht (Netherlands) for required treatment. The hospital cost is (1,94,000 Euros or Rs. 1.47 crores). Add another Rs. 48 lakhs towards living expenses for 1-year at Netherlands. Total cost of treatment is Rs. 1.94 crores approximately.

After having raised little over 1 crore from on Milaap, we have now collaborated with BitGiving in association with CNN News 18 to raise for the second phase of the fundraiser. I am humbled to see two of the best crowdfunding platforms in India have come together to save my little girl.

We have tried knocking many doors with government authorities in India, met health minister of Rajasthan many times, newspaper & media coverage etc. A Government Committee was also formed by Health Minister of Rajasthan to look into the matter, but to no avail.

Your donations will go towards easing the burden of Avishi’s treatment, medical care and incidental costs associated with a long stay away from home over the next several months. We need to act very quickly as the count goes in days.

During this difficult journey, your prayers and support will make a lot of difference. We look forward to seeing Avishi grow up normally, run around with the wind in her hair, dance with her parents at her wedding and enjoy everything that life can offer.

We will continue to update you on Avishi’s treatment progress through this page, through Facebook and our website – Thank you so much for your love, support and generosity !

Seedrs, The UK’s Top Investor In Private Companies, Sees Record Levels of Investment and Fundraising Activity

  • October was Seedrs biggest ever month with almost £20 million invested into campaigns on the platform
  • Seedrs Alumnus FreeAgent today announces float on AIM, becoming the first-ever business to IPO after raising money through equity crowdfunding
  • New tennis world number one Andy Murray has completed 18 investments into British businesses on Seedrs following investments into Perkbox and WeSwap
  • Brexit fails to halt Seedrs’s European expansion with new Berlin and Amsterdam offices
  • Seedrs remains the UK’s most active investor in private companies with more funded deals than any other investors (including any other equity crowdfunding platform) this year

Press Release – London, 16 November 2016: This morning, Seedrs alumnus, FreeAgent floated on London Stock Exchange’s AIM marking the first time an equity crowdfunded company has gone on to IPO and giving shares owned by Seedrs investors liquidity on the stock exchange.

This announcement comes directly after Beauhurst announced that Seedrs has retained its title as the UK’s most active investor in private companies across 2016, having completed 122 deals by the end of Q3. This is more than any other investor during the period according to a report released by the independent research firm.1

More than £160 million has now been invested into campaigns on Seedrs since July 2012 when the company launched and October became a record-breaking month with almost £20 million invested into campaigns. Perkbox, the UK’s top employee and customer engagement provider smashed its £1 million target, overfunding to £4.35 million and becoming Seedrs biggest fundraise to date. With more than 300 investors, including world number one Andy Murray and prominent venture capital firm, Draper Esprit investing on the same terms as the crowd, the campaign highlighted a growing trend of VC firms leading or supporting crowdfunding rounds on Seedrs.

The UK fintech company also saw the world’s first peer-to-peer money transfer platform, WeSwap, set a record for the most investors in a single campaign on Seedrs, with more than 3,000 investors backing the £1 million raise which overfunded to £2.4 million. This round boasted the largest number of investors, also including Andy Murray, for any independent business fundraising on a UK equity crowdfunding platform.

Jeff Lynn, CEO and Co Founder of Seedrs: “We are breaking records this year and by the end of Q3 we had exceeded the amount invested on the platform across the whole of 2015, while opening new offices in Berlin and Amsterdam as we push forward our European expansion.

“We congratulate FreeAgent following today’s float on AIM and for becoming the first equity crowdfunded IPO. As the early stage investment space matures in the coming years, we look forward to seeing many more Seedrs companies floating or exiting. We strongly believe that this asset class will be very fruitful for investors with diverse investment portfolios, and FreeAgent’s listing is an early example of that.

“Despite Brexit, the UK is still attractive and safe for inward investment and will continue to be one of the number one destinations for entrepreneurs to set up a business with its favourable tax reliefs, streamlined business incorporation and simple transport abroad.”

Student Entrepreneurs Experience Crowdfunding through Suffolk University Course

7 campaigns launch after unique startup prep at Sawyer Business School

Press Release – BOSTON — Suffolk University has introduced one of the nation’s first experiential courses on crowdfunding, where students are launching campaigns to fund their own start-up companies through Kickstarter and Indiegogo.

Students in the Sawyer Business School class will launch crowdfunding campaigns the week of Nov. 14, coinciding with National Entrepreneurship Month. Startup products and services include an almond-based Alfredo sauce, a high-protein coffee product, a fishing tackle box/cooler combination and a yoga studio on wheels.

“While a few other universities are discussing crowdfunding as part of traditional course content, the real-world approach to this course makes it different,” said Management and Entrepreneurship Professor Jennifer Dinger. “Suffolk students in this class are learning how to turn their business ideas into action, and they are going after the funding to support those enterprises.”

The course expands on the foundation of knowledge and skills honed throughout the Sawyer Business School curriculum, while fast tracking entrepreneurial activity through startups and the raising of capital.

In a cross-disciplinary approach that taps into the wider resources of Suffolk University, students in the class have teamed up with:

The concept for the crowdfunding course came out of conversations between Dinger and Professor Chaim Letwin, a colleague in the Sawyer Business School’s Management and Entrepreneurship department. Dinger and Letwin both study crowdfunding platforms and how campaign components relate to people’s decisions to contribute money to a particular project. The course looks at factors that lead to crowdfunding success, including the idea, the pitch and the prototype.

“Small business and innovation are critical to the health and vibrancy of the economy,” Dinger said. “Experiential courses like this are aimed at accelerating the startup launch process and increasing the rate of startup businesses among our most promising young adults.”

Student-led ventures launching crowdsourcing campaigns Nov. 14- 16 are:

  • WarmUp Protein Coffee: This venture, founded by Suffolk senior and Entrepreneurship major James Testa of East Boston, is targeting its first product, a high-protein coffee, to fitness-focused people on the go.
  • The Wicked Fisha, founded by Suffolk senior Chuck Gibson of Malden, Mass., plans a line of innovative fishing equipment and accessories, starting with a cooler/tackle box combo that eliminates the hassle of lugging multiple boxes to a fishing destination.
  • Buddha Bus Yoga provides traveling yoga classes out of mobile studio. Founded by Suffolk Junior Sara Maloney, of Groveland, Mass., the business offers on-site classes at workplaces, college campuses, food markets and more.
  • Goliath Gallon, founded by Suffolk senior Zack Smith of Methuen, Mass., makes a reusable, bisphenol A (BPA)-free and easily cleaned gallon bottle for ice, fruits, amino acids or whatever is needed. The Kickstarter campaign will fund the initial production run, including a plastic molding tool that is necessary for mass production.
  • NEO Miners is a card game that focuses on resource management and economic principles, with a space-travel theme. Founder Jason Moker is a Suffolk senior from Georgetown, Mass. Be warned! The depths of space have encounters that can be dangerous and unpredictable!
  • Vegitano is a health food brand offering alternatives to people who follow a vegan diet or are allergic to dairy and/or gluten. The first product is an almond-based Alfredo sauce. The startup was founded by Willied Hessein, a Suffolk senior from Miami.
  • The Upward Bound + Startup Suffolk Partnership is aimed at raising money for the social good. The campaign, led by the student team of Manuel Lopez Campos, Ashley Cesero, and Carter Nuttall, is focused on funding Upward Bound students to participate in Startup Suffolk, a bridge program for rising high school seniors. Upward Bound is a federally funded academic success program that helps high school students who are below the poverty line and the first generation from their family to attend college. Suffolk Startup introduces high school students to entrepreneurial concepts.

Gnome Helps Gardeners and Farmers Save Water, Power and Time

Solar and RF powered smart irrigation system launches on Indiegogo

Press Release – (Los Angeles / Taipei, November 8, 2016) – Today Hugreen launched an Indiegogo campaign for its flagship product, Gnome. This solar and radio frequency powered smart irrigation system remotely controls and monitors gardens and farms. Four starter kits are available, beginning at $120.

The Gnome system is comprised of a network of sensors and water valves, connected to one central hub:

  • The hub is the control center for Gnome’s sensors and valves. It can link up to 30 nodes (sensors and valves) that are within a 1km radius range, and connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Its primary function is to send data to the user and relay commands to the nodes.
  • The sensors monitor fertilizer level, sunlight exposure, soil temperature, and ambient temperature via four stainless steel probes.
  • The valves control water flow of the sprinkler system remotely, which can handle water pressure up to 115 psi.

Gnome is the only IoT sensor that can measure fertilizer level and soil moisture concurrently. Gnome uses industrial level Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) technology to measure the presence of fertilizer and uses that data to get an unbiased soil moisture level, which is typically only found in more expensive non-smart sensors.

Hugreen founder Clement Lee is a solar researcher and engineer who led major projects for an international solar tech corporation. “I quit my job and started building rooftop gardens in Hong Kong, but wasn’t pleased with the tech solutions available to monitor and adjust irrigation as there was a lot of unnecessary waste,” he said. “So I decided to combine my background in engineering and passion for sustainable farming to create solar-powered technology that makes is possible for everyone to grow.”

Gnome’s app helps gardeners manage their plants remotely. Live updates are provided for each sensor, and users are alerted if the soil becomes too dry, or the water too warm. Users are then able to control the water system or automate timers for the valves based on soil moisture level, ultimately saving them time, money and labor.

The app also teaches gardeners how to grow new plants. “The Gnome app has a comprehensive plant database that can teach you how to optimize growing at your location,” Lee said. “Based on plant type, seasonality and location, Gnome can tell you what parameters would be best for this plant and ways you can achieve them.”

Gnome’s campaign runs from November 8 to December 16, 2016. For a full rundown on their pledges, visit the Indiegogo page.

For over a year, he has been in monthly residence at Bar Thalia at Symphony Space on the Upper East Side, “stripping the Great American Songbook to the bone” hosting “Mostly Marcus.”
